The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
