A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret information in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of official operations, from transport use to communication practices.
